MANOJ MENEZES -

CHURCHILL FELLOW 2011

REPORTS FROM LONDON

It has been a wonderful 6 weeks of the Churchill scholarship. I have had the opportunity to attend the neuromuscular clinics at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and National Hospital for Neurology, Queen Square, centres of clinical and research excellence in muscle and nerve disease. I also attended conferences in Ljubljana, Slovenia and Faro, Portugal and met many researchers and clinicians with who I hope to collaborate once I return.

Living in central London has been great fun, just a short walk to GOSH and Queen Square, and not having to take the tube an advantage. I have had some free time to explore the sights, especially the Museums (most of which are free and open on weekends).  I would be very happy to share a few tips on living in London (especially on accommodation, travel and finances) so please do contact me (drmanojpm@yahoo.co.in) if you do have any questions. I will be in London for a little while longer, so do contact me if you are headed this way.

Tips for Travelling Fellows:

1. Attending the fellows information session is a must. It was the first time I heard of some of the programs and apps that I used regularly durng my trip.

2. Accommodation: Many universities and housing societies in London are able to provide short-term accommodation that is reasonably priced, and most importantly, centrally located. The Goodenough college (www.goodenough.ac.uk)UCL residences(www.ucl.ac.uk/residences) and Bonham Carter house (Siraj.Hafesji@genesisha.org.uk), are good options. It helps if you are attached to an institution affiliated to UCL, but they do accommodate others when not full.

3. The 28degrees mastercard is an excellent Australian credit card for short term use as there are no ATM fees. If you are staying longer than a couple of weeks in London, consider opening an account and getting a debit card. I did this on the day I arrived (HSBC bank), transferred money through Hifx and had a debit card in 48 hrs that I was able to use in London and all over Europe.

4. I found my IPad very useful (Google Maps, Skype, Banking, the tube). I presume many of these are available on the Iphone too. The Christmas may be a good time to pick one up

CHURCHILL FELLOW FROM BRITAIN VISITS SYDNEY

Lynne Challinor, Churchill Fellow 2009 and Churchill Fellows Association committee member, had the privilege and wonderful opportunity of meeting and entertaining Dr Tom Lewis from England. Enjoying a meal together at Circular Quay followed by the delights of a ferry trip up the Parramatta River, it was a great opportunity to hear about his Fellowship and at the same time, showcase a little of Sydney. Not that Tom had not already seem some of Sydney's beautiful sights, or for that matter, a little of Australia, but on a glorious day, what a relaxing way to spend an afternoon hearing about his Fellowship.

Dr Lewis, who is a Quantitative Geneticist with the Animal Health Trust in Suffolk, England, is a 2011 Fellow awarded a Fellowship to study 'Breeding strategies for prioritizing health in pedigree dogs' and on arrival in Australia, spent time in Armidale before arriving in Sydney where his research will see him enjoying Sydney's delights for 3 weeks. His final leg will be in Western Australia before returning home.

Tom is accompanied by his wife, Rachel and two children, and whereas Rachel has visited Sydney previously though many years ago, this was Tom's first visit to Sydney which, he explained, has been wonderful. He said his research has been very positive and not only has he benefitted from the research on a personal level, but the information that he is able to take back to England will prove most beneficial for future research. It was very interesting to hear of his plans for research to use genetics to breed dogs for specific purposes such as, for example, drugs detection dogs with keen senses of smell for use in the prison services. It goes without saying this has far reaching benefits globally.

On behalf of this Association, Lynne extended a warm welcome to him and we wish him all the best for the final leg of his Fellowship.
